Yearly Community Initiatives

Blooming Benefits Days

Benefits are blooming for the seniors and disabled populations in M4A's five county region throughout the month of April. On these days, seniors and disabled persons can gain access to information and receive application assistance to access benefit programs that can help pay for medications, healthcare, utilities, food, and much more all under one roof. All services are free of charge. Our community partners include Disability Rights & Resources, Alabama Institute for the Deaf & Blind, Veteran's Administration, Social Security Administration, Alabama Department of Public Health, and other community organizations.

Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month, a perfect opportunity to show our appreciation for older adults in our five-county region. Since, 1963, communities across the nation have joined in the annual commemoration of Older Americans Month-a proud tradition that shows our nation's committment to celebrating the contributions and achievements of older Americans. The Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging (M4A) joins in the national celebration with activities and events throughout the month of May to promote intergenerational engagement and recreation.

Be A Senior Fan

The "Be a Senior Fan" initiative seeks to reduce or eliminate heat related health and mortality risks to senior citizens by helping low-income seniors in our five-county region stay cool during the hot summer months. Churches, clubs, organizations, and individuals are asked to donate new box fans that are distributed to those seniors who do not have air conditioning or cannot afford to run it often.

Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Voucher Program

M4A in partnership with the Farmer's Market Authority, CAWACO, Alabama Department of Senior Services, and the County Extension Office work to provide a direct tie between production agriculture and nutrition by providing seniors age 60 or older the opportunity to buy fresh local produce directly from farmers. Seniors are given coupons to redeem for fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from farmers markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs. M4A's staff members assist seniors with applying for the coupon vouchers which are mailed directly to the senior. Financial eligibility requirements apply. The Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Voucher Program has ended for 2013, please call back in January for next year's vouchers.
